Pierce Brosnan Salutes Sean Connery at the AFI Life Achievement Award

To tackle a Western as your first film as director is a brave decision. David Von Ancken's accomplished film explores several themes. Primarily a revenge film set after the American Civil War has ended, this features the ruthless pursuit of a former Union soldier.

Opening in the snow capped peaks, this sees Pierce Brosnan casually cooking supper over a open fire. As a shot rings out, he is struck in the arm and the chase is on.

A story of survival, this is a brutal and authentic looking Western as Brosnan goes through hell in his attempt to escape from Liam Neeson's Confederate Colonel.

With shades of "Deliverance", this has Brosnan on top form as a lethal and formidable opponent…. I last watched this on dvd when it initially came out so some fourteen years later this felt like a whole new movie.

For the first hour and twenty minutes we have an exciting hunter vs hunted survival epic through snowy mountains through the pastures and onto the deserts as an excellent Liam Neeson and his five man posse attempts to capture the equally excellent Pierce Brosnan.

What i appreciated more on this viewing was the cameo appearances of Wes Studi and Angelica Huston. On realising who they were portraying meant the finale made a lot more sense and actually added to the films revisionist strategy.

Beautifully made and nicely acted, Seraphim Falls gave away many more secrets this time around and proved a more complete and rewarding viewing experience.

To call this film minimalist would be accurate - we have no good guy, no bad guy, no introduction and no motive until late in the film. For a first feature, sure and competently directed too.

Compelling, however it is not. So why did I watch it? It was a sick day and I ran out of films with 'Ninja' in the title. Opening in the snow-drenched mountains several years after the end of the Civil War, Neeson and his motley crew including the not seen enough these days Michael Wincott and Ed Lauter are chasing Brosnan for an unknown reason.

Its gritty, you feel the cold, both leads absolutely convince and all is well. The film progresses through various setpieces - an act of kindness for an injured man, an accidental run in with a group of horse thieves, etc - and landscapes the snow gives way to barren tundra, eventually turning into blistering desert , all….

Very atmospheric almost to the point of overstaying its welcome. And, guess what Leo, Pierce Brosnan is waaay better at grunting, crawling through snow, cauterizing his own wounds, and lying inside gutted out horses while being chased across the tundra by a European actor with an indecipherable "Southern" accent.

Imma need Leo to transfer his ill-gotten Oscar to Pierce immediately. Well, actually, obviously his Oscar first should go to the person who should have won that year--Michael B.

If your first thought upon hearing about the existence of this film was, "dang. A revenge Western with impeccable cinematography, and starring two Irishmen with perpetual sorrow in their eyes?

Count me in! Two reasons to watch this movie liam neeson and Pierce Brosnan is there a third reason? Solid Western, nothing more, nothing less.

Brosnan and Neeson are fine in their roles as the hunted and the hunter. The very spiritual and symbolic ending is very well shot, comes right out of nowhere though.

Went downhill after the amazing first 40 minutes or so, but still a pretty decent western, and one that I will probably revisit somewhere down the line.

Great to see two of Ireland's best exports in a film together as well. Damn, this movie really cooks for a good 70mins, before transitioning slowly then suddenly into a far weaker, flabbier, underwritten film-schooly version of itself.

I want to go where it asks me to, but I just couldn't on this one. It's too bad as it's destination really kneecaps an otherwise impressive, rootin-tootin-bear-grills'n macho hats 'n horses movie.

Nice to see Brosnan and Neeson work together. Plenty of action and an engaging story. Entertaining throughout.

A solid revenge western for the first two thirds and it's like the writers didn't know how to end it and took some acid.

I'm sure some will find some meaning in the ending but it left me cold and bemused. The original list linked below is getting long so larger sections are now here.
