Verified Purchase. Anyway I'm not going to go too much into reviewing the movie I will say that the picture looks great ,sound is good too considering it's from the mid 70's.
If you liked the first French Connection I'd recommend checking this one out too , the price was pretty cheap so it was definitely worth buying the Blu-ray in my opinion.
It has a good replay value as well another reason to own this classic! Over worked plot - just waste of time - primarily just a fake story about "Popeye" getting hooked on drugs to lead good guys off trail of bad guys.
Nothing new here - just best they could come up with to make you forget all about James Bond series - what a joke. If you watched French Connection One - you saw it all first time around.
Big disappointment. Without a doubt one of the best Gene Hackman movies. One person found this helpful. It feels like a TV movie sequel of an incredible first film.
If you are a fan Of French connection one, you will be very disappointed in this sequel , It really stunk. Love Gene Hackman, love the first filom.
Really enjoyed this sequal but do miss the character of 's NYC. Really a great series of films. Lots of similar films around this time worth checking out as well.
Across Street and Fort Apache the Bronx to name a few Not bad, as far as sequels go. Enjoyable opening and riveting chase finally, are separated by a long heroin addiction segment that ways the film down.
Brutal, and something less than satisfying. Unlike the non-stop first film, II grinds to a halt for the lengthy Popeye-as-junkie sequence. Why doesn't Charnier just bump him off?
He's in a filthy, crime-ridden foreign city. But then there wouldn't be a movie at all. The Old Lady is disturbing.
Ending is, shall we say, quite satisfying. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Produced by Phillip D'Antoni, the man who also produced another classic 'Bullit' and the excellent 'The Seven-Ups', 'The French Connection' is the epitome of dark police thrillers which lit up our cinema screens in and gave us a raw view of the dirty underbelly of New York, cold and menacing and policed by imperfect cops who did their job and not all succumbed to corruption.
Foremost Gene Hackman put together two career defining performances in both FC films which few actors could better as the rogue, desperate cop fighting the system and with the compulsion to bring down a 'Mr Big' in the drug trade.
Right from the start with The Three Degrees performing live their song 'Everybody Gets To Go To The Moon' a clear reference to a high from cocaine this is about street life and a big drug arrival in town and the painstaking efforts by 'Popeye' Doyle Hackman and his fellow cops to discover the source and the crew distributing the drugs.
The whole operation is beautifully unraveled by director William Freidkin sometimes slowly, dourly and with skillful bursts of rapid action that hold the viewer's interest and attention forget it if you want action in every scene, this is a film that rewards you in the long haul.
Verified Purchase. Excellent movie of course, but the Filmmaker Signature Series release is the best copy to own, and it's not even close.
The first Blu-ray release had brutally awful color timing, and it's just baffling what Friedkin was thinking when he approved it. The color timing of that release is nowhere close to how it looked in theaters or on previous home video releases , and is terribly ugly on its own terms, with a bizarre emphasis on pastels.
Not surprisingly, the movie's cinematographer was quite unhappy with it. Thankfully, the Filmmaker Signature Series release has none of those problems.
Friedkin worked with cinematographer Owen Roizman this time around, and the film looks as it should, with accurate colors and nice gritty 70's textures.
The release also contains the original mono audio mix, which in this case is far superior to the modern 5. Hence the film starts in that southern French port with businessman Alin Charnier Fernndo Rey setting up a plan to ship a huge cache of heroin hidden inside a car to New York City with actor Henri Devereaux Frederic de Pasquale as the cover.
That starts when they run into some mafiosos at the Copacabana they frequent. By following him they stumble upon Chanier.
The movie is part thriller. What can the two cops find out about Boca and Chanier? There is a lot of time spent sitting in cars staking out suspects, listening to wire taps, and tailing people through the streets and subways of New York.
The procedural part for example, gives this movie a sense of realism. There is a lot of hard work finding evidence, etc. The film also played with that aspect such as when Doyle is following Chanier and he keeps on getting off and on a waiting subway just to mess with Popeye.
A note should also be made about the conclusion without giving it away. This is something mentioned in real analyses of the war on drugs, and it's a very important element to be considered when viewing this movie.
This movie has really stood up to the test of time and is always a joy to watch. I had not seen this in its entirety until now, in a dark room and with no interruptions.
But wow. For a movie, this was the reality gritty show of a cop movie. Comparing it to Dirty Harry style of storytelling coming out the same year, FC is raw, as if there is no camera nor acting involved.
It feels real and in-situ, you are right there with them. Groundbreaking for its style. Forget about the car chase being great, the fact that the actors are so oblivious of the camera makes this a great movie to watch.
Hackman and De Niro are the Brandos of their time. I love this film just because it's New York. I'm at the edge of my seat even if I'm watching it several times.
Popeye Doyle's dogged pursuit of crooks attempting to deliver drugs into NY is quite delirious and exciting as a roller-coaster while at the same time it delivers compelling characters in the two cops as well as in the French importer of drugs and his hired assassin.
Great film. One person found this helpful. I can't say anything bad about this movie it's great and groundbreaking for Very Highly Recommended.
Gene Hackman is a phenomenal actor and deserved his best actor Oscar for this performance. Nothing PC about Popeye Doyle. It is only 1 hour and 45 minutes - very fast-paced and keeps things moving right along.
Gene Hackman makes even a stakeout interesting. Holds up more as a nostalgia piece than anything else. Hackman is great as Popeye Doyle, and intriguing to see NYC as it once was and not the adult Disneyland it has become.
Unfortunately, the plot collapses as the movie progresses. Events happen to fit the ending, and not in any logical or coherent way.
For example, the French Connection's seemingly competent and professional sidekick suddenly decides that the best way to kill Doyle is from a rooftop in a broad daylight.

Music is composed for both films by jazz musician Don Ellis. Symphonic it isn't, more of a growl, a snarl at key moments, and effective for every scene.
Made my hairs stand up on the back of my neck in each film. A couple of connections from this geek Bill Hickman doubles as a corrosive fellow detective but he is the fabulous stunt driver of the car used in a tremendous chase under the New York train service during the film.
I suspect much of the dialogue is ad-libbed at times and Hackman plunges the depths as a fish out of water without a word of French who is kidnapped and force-fed cocaine to induce a dependence.
Those scenes, and his subsequent 'cold turkey' cure, are harrowing and not for the squeamish. Hackman is totally awesome as he tries to overcome the ridicule of the French and the brutality of his captors in turn.
My copy is a 2 disc box set with English audio and subtitles, though there are no subtitles for the brief stretches of French dialogue in 'FC II'.
The first part had all the ingredients of a rapidly moving and utterly tense cop thriller with the plot situated in contemporary New York of the early seventies.
I never thought the sequel would be equal of surpass the first movie. I can't say anything bad about this movie it's great and groundbreaking for Very Highly Recommended.

For example, the French Connection's seemingly competent and professional sidekick suddenly decides that the best way to kill Doyle is from a rooftop in a broad daylight.
And I hate to nitpick, but that particular scene begins with the second implausible foot chase where Hackman inexplicably runs down criminals either half his age in the first case or who have a four-story head start.
The movie plods along to an unsatisfying ending. Popeye accidentally guns down his on-squad nemesis, but the moment has no cinematic value. See all reviews.
Top reviews from other countries. D J Jackson: Passionate about Film. This film, based on a true story, and the non-fiction book of the same name, is one of THE great crime films of the 20th Century.
This film is the original, the quintessential, narcotics movie, pitting Narcotics cops against smugglers and dealers, over the course of a single major sale.
It tells the story in an almost documentary style, up close and personal with the police, the dealers and the buyers.
The action takes place in Marseilles, which looks beautiful, sunny and serene, and mostly, in New York, which does not! This is not a glamorous touristy view of the city, although we do visit some up-market hotels and clubs, and a very nice restaurant in one of the funniest scenes, with the villains enjoying a lovely lunch, and the cops outside in the cold.
Mostly, we are seeing run-down factories, low-end housing, back-street shops. And we are party to the hard slog of policing, the endless hours taken to chase a lead, build a case.
There is also, famously, one of the most outstanding chase scenes in movie history. For the aficionado incidentally, the car involved is a Pontiac LeMans.
It is incredibly scary and effective. They are both wonderful. Hackman gives a superb performance as a rough, experienced, hard-man cop, with no real life other than his work.
He is good at his job, but a man on the edge. Scheider is more measured and maintains control over himself, and to some extent, and with effort, over his partner.
They are so good, it is almost impossible to tear your eyes away. This is a film that hits the ground running, and then never stops. It trots, it canters, it gallops, in turns.
A magnificently, breathlessly real, 5 Stars. Report abuse. This UK steel book blu is the one to buy if you want to avoid the unwatchable Friedkin edition.
Believe me that version is unwatchable, I have it. I couldn't belive that it was as bad as the reviews said it was. I have got to stop watching all the flashy modern rubbish!
They are making old films look dull! I love The French Connection. Not as much as most I think but still, it's a solid film, well structured with great performances all round and some of the most bad ass standout scenes of the 70's!
I know I'm late to the party because it's a transfer from around , but it's pretty awful!
