This story centers around the murder investigation and Ellen helping this traumatized child. A compelling plot, realistic characters and an excellent introduction to "Little Mercies".

    Mar 17, Rose rated it really liked it Shelves: contemporary , crime , drama , netgalley , mystery , realistic-fiction , psychological , arc-or-galley , quick-read , novella.

Quick review for a quick read. This was a very nice, self-contained murder mystery. This novella is a prequel companion to Heather Gudenkauf's upcoming novel "Little Mercies.

Ellen notes that the case has a similarity to one committed 13 years ago, when another little boy was found beside his mother. S Quick review for a quick read.

Suspicions link to the surviving boy of that former crime, but Ellen believes another culprit is at work. The narrative toggles between the crime scene and parties and Ellen's home life with her three kids and always on the go husband he's a basketball player.

I thought it was well done for the details it provided and for being a self-contained case with some finality. I didn't think the mystery would wrap up, but it provided a clear rationale for motive and the suspicious parties when it came up.

I will admit it went by very quickly, but I was still invested in the details of the story. I'm looking forward to seeing where this respective story continues with "Little Mercies.

Enjoyed this little prequel and Little Mercies her new book comes out soon. I have always thought that social work is a very hard field to be in, and I liked the character in this one.

If her new book is as interesting as this little short, it should be very good. Jul 04, Shannon rated it really liked it. This short story did exactly what it was suppose to do, got me excited about the new book!

But, reading it after is just as good. So, you have to fit a lot of details in a short amount and Gudenkauf does it well. The story flows well and gives you a glimpse into the horrors Ellen s Novellas are usually short stories to get readers excited for a new novel coming out.

The story flows well and gives you a glimpse into the horrors Ellen sees in her job as a social worker. The mystery of the murder will surprise you and leave you wanting more from Gudenkauf.

This is a short story that is a prequel to a coming novel, Little Mercies, by this author. I wanted to read this to see how authentic the portrayal of a social worker in the child welfare field might be.

I was surprised at how realistic the story was, in many ways. There were exceptions--most notable the "quiet morning in the office" seemed almost unheard of, but there was much that took me back to many memories of children and families from the past.

While the ending is within the realm of poss This is a short story that is a prequel to a coming novel, Little Mercies, by this author.

While the ending is within the realm of possibility, luckily it is a rarity. Jul 08, Bridget rated it liked it. A murder mystery from a different viewpoint, that of a social worker.

I didn't realise that this book would be so short, barely pages, but whilst it is tiny, it is good. I will read more from this writer.

Oct 10, Debbie Desotell rated it it was amazing. I loved it! I stayed up all night reading it and never put it down! I have all of her books, she is amazing!

May 30, Tulika rated it it was amazing. This is a short prequel novella to Little mercies by the author. Though being short it really packs a punch.

I did not see the end coming. A classic who did it story. Jan 02, Heather rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites.

Jan 05, Lindsay Gentles rated it it was amazing Shelves: I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did but WOW, what a roller coaster ride of pure adventure.

Heather Gudenkauf is an author that I have picked up here and there over the years but not someone that I continually pay attention to and I have to wonder why that is.

This is likely the third book of hers that I have read and can honestly say that I loved all of them. Whether it is based around the original crime from years ago or if the crimes of 'Little Lies' have nothing to do with it but either way, I am excited about the potential of reading more of these characters.

I liked both Ellen and Joe and think there is definitely 'more to the story' of their relationship. Overall, a very worthwhile read for those who enjoy quick, fast-faced, stories.

May 01, PinkAmy loves books, cats and naps rated it it was amazing. Social worker Ellen Moore is awake by a call in the middle of a cold winter night.

A woman has been found murdered in the park and her young son, Mason, is left traumatized. The case mirrors one at the beginning of her career, thirteen years ago when another young boy, Jonah, was found next to his murdered mother, under the same statue.

Is there a connection? Could Jonah be involved in this murder? Could Ellen herself be in danger.

I do recommend you read everything Gudenkauf has even written, for your own enjoyment. Ellen's heartfelt narration show us a dedicated, yet flawed social worker, mother, wife, and daughter.

A fierce advocate for her clients. The plot is compelling as readers will be engrossed in the mystery and root for both Mason and Jonah's happy endings.

My only criticism Heather Gudenkauf is that she can't write new books and stories for me to read every month or week, I don't want to be too greedy.

    May 16, Magpie67 rated it it was amazing Shelves: kindle , suspense , detectives , iowa-author , psychology , alphabet-challenge , magpie-sgoal , wom-flipping-the-pages , cold-case , social-work.

Sad circumstances, great short story to lead into the lives of Ellen Moore, her family and the detectives.

I love everything Heather writes so I can't wait until the full book Little Mercies is in my hands. An awesome Kindle short!!!!

May 30, Noeleen rated it liked it. I've always enjoyed the majority of books by Heather Gudenkauf and I'm really looking forward to reading her new book, Little Mercies.

Although this book, Little Lies, was a short teaser for the new book, I'm not sure it was really necessary. Although it will fill in a half hour reading, I didn't love it but nor did I dislike it.

I guess I just thought it was pointless. My expectation for the new book is that hopefully it will be better, time will tell.

Mar 21, Jackie Lane rated it really liked it Shelves: review-pending. In this prequel to Little Mercies we are introduced to Social Worker, Ellen Moore, who is called in to assist the police in an investigation.

What Ellen doesn't know is that her life is about to change and not in a good way. With Ellen's mistake hanging over her, she learns what is important to her and what is not.

May 01, Kelly rated it it was amazing Shelves: books-read-in I'm feeling kind of lost that I have finished this book. Feb 19, Mom2triplets04 rated it liked it Shelves: read-on-my-kindle , short-stories , mystery-thrillers.

This short story was fun to read on my kindle. It's a short story mystery and starts with a death of a woman in the park where her 4 year old is found sitting near her body.

The main character is a social worker who basically solves the murder mystery. Can't wait to read her full novel.

Love Heather's writing style. Sep 02, Debbie rated it really liked it. A quick read introducing Ellen a social worker with a huge heart for her work.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. Official website. At a public school in Monterey, California , a murder suddenly occurs on trivia night, but neither the victim nor the murderer is revealed.

Backtracking to the first day of school, the families of five first-graders are introduced. Madeline Martha Mackenzie is a strong-willed, wealthy, and feared alpha female in town with a first-grade daughter and teenage daughter from an earlier marriage.

Secrets are revealed, including that Madeline is struggling to cope with her ex-husband Nathan's marriage to a yoga instructor named Bonnie and also trying to build a relationship with her older daughter.

Her friend, Celeste Wright, is a retired lawyer and the mother of twin sons who are also beginning at the same school.

New to town is Jane Chapman — a young single mother raising her son, Ziggy. Madeline and Celeste befriend Jane.

The equally wealthy and feared Renata Klein's daughter Amabella accuses Ziggy of attempting to choke her, which he denies. Celeste appears to have a very happy life with her husband Perry, but he starts to show signs of being violent.

Jane's motives for moving to Monterey are unknown. Perry lashes out at Celeste when he discovers he missed orientation at the school, but she lets it slide.

Jane looks for work with little success, and Madeline goes on the warpath against Renata when it is revealed Renata did not invite Ziggy to Amabella's birthday party.

Ed questions Madeline's devotion to him when she continues to complain about seeing Nathan with Bonnie all the time, and Madeline is further disturbed when Bonnie takes Abigail, Madeline's oldest daughter, to Planned Parenthood.

Nathan tries to come to a peaceful resolution with Ed about their parenting of Abigail, but Ed senses Nathan trying to intimidate him and stands firm.

Madeline's younger daughter, Chloe, and Bonnie's daughter, Skye, attempt to mend the wounds between Ziggy and Amabella but it leads to an incident of unwanted affection and the parents of the four children are called into the principal's office, leading Jane to have a flashback of an unwanted episode.

Perry chokes Celeste when he believes she deliberately left him out of a family gathering, after which Celeste threatens to leave him.

Renata's party for Amabella is a huge success but she is ultimately upset when Madeline invited Amabella's closest friends and Ziggy to Disney on Ice on the same day.

At therapy, Perry claims his outbursts are out of fear that Celeste does not love him, which Celeste attempts to deny.

When Abigail's academic performance begins to decline, her guidance counselor suggests it is being caused by stress at home, so she decides to live with Nathan, much to Madeline's dismay.

Jane gets Ziggy involved with more extracurricular activities and helps him construct a family tree for school with Madeline's help. Abigail moves in with Nathan and Bonnie.

Celeste legally represents Joseph and Madeline in a meeting with the Mayor regarding the controversial Avenue Q , and successfully persuades the Mayor to allow the play to proceed.

In the process, Celeste realizes her desire to return to work. She asks her therapist how to best convince Perry but Dr.

Reisman is more concerned with why she is afraid to do so. At home, Perry tells Celeste not to attend any future meetings.

When she refuses, he grabs her by the throat but quickly relinquishes when one of their boys enters the room. Joseph and Madeline kiss and it is revealed they had an affair a year ago.

Madeline locates a man online whom she believes to be Saxon Banks. Barnes, the teacher, suspects Amabella is still being bullied. Despite Amabella's assertions that she and Ziggy are friends, Ms.

Barnes requests Jane to have Ziggy psychologically evaluated, but the psychologist believes that Ziggy is innocent and that he may actually be being bullied himself.

Nathan spots Jane at the gun range and tells Madeline. Although Jane reassures Madeline that she carries a gun solely for its psychological benefits, Madeline begins to regret tracking down Saxon Baker, the man whom she believes to be Saxon Banks.

Renata discovers a bite mark on Amabella's arm, but Amabella refuses to disclose who bit her. Renata assumes it is Ziggy and a meeting is held between Jane and the school principal.

Joseph is convinced Madeline still has feelings for him but she maintains that their affair is over. While they argue, a teenage distracted driver crashes into their car.

Madeline is uninjured, while Joseph is hospitalized. The incident raises suspicion from Ed and Joseph's wife, Tori. Perry is angered when Celeste does not ask the twins to tidy their toys.

A confrontation triggers further violence from Perry, followed by aggressive sex. Later, Dr. Reisman confronts Celeste with the belief that she is being abused; Celeste eventually reveals that she has previously feared for her life and had considered leaving Perry.

Reisman urges her to do so. Jane reveals to Madeline that she went to confront Saxon Baker, who turned out to be the wrong man. Madeline attempts to convince Jane to give up the search.

Barnes relays to Jane that a petition has begun to have Ziggy suspended. Although Renata did not start it, Jane confronts her and accidentally gouges her eye.

She later apologizes, realizing that they both want to protect their children. Renata forgives Jane and reveals her plan to schedule play-dates with each of Amabella's classmates to discover who is hurting her.

Celeste's therapist advises her to prepare to leave Perry by renting an apartment and disclosing the abuse to friends. Later, Perry tries to initiate sex with Celeste, who defensively fractures his penis with a tennis racket.

Returning from the hospital, Perry tells Celeste that she is "lucky" that he did not kill her. The following day she begins looking for an apartment.

At home, Madeline and Ed have another argument about her lack of passion toward him, which culminates in her alluding to having made a "terrible mistake".

Bonnie tells Nathan that Abigail's "secret project" is auctioning her virginity to raise money for Amnesty International. At their couples dinner, the two reluctantly tell Madeline and Ed.

Madeline furiously confronts Abigail, disclosing her affair in the process. Following another beating, Celeste decides to leave Perry the day after trivia night.

Ziggy confesses to Jane that it was Max, one of Celeste's sons, who choked Amabella. Madeline talks to Joseph about his wife knowing about their affair, and Jane woefully tells Celeste that her son is the bully.

Celeste realizes that Max was emulating Perry's abuse, having overheard it while he was playing a video game.

I purchased Little Mercies at least a year ago and then "accidentally" heard there was a prequel. I downloaded it about 6 months ago and literally started and finished it today!

I'm having surgery tomorrow so I figured I'd get it out of the way before starting Little Mercies during recovery. The end was kind of "open ended", when Ellen found out who killed Marissa, and that was pretty much it.

A quick read, it was nonetheless compelling with a lot of ground covered in only 45 pages. It certainly held my interest, and I would eagerly read the following novel to learn more about the characters.

If I have one quibble, it is that Ellen's life seems just too perfect. Her husband, without griping, delivers the children to school and the baby to the babysitters, washes, diapers, and feeds the children, never knowing exactly when Ellen will arrive home - if at all.

This just didn't seem realistic to me. Perhaps the family will fall short of perfection in the next book? The story was interesting, and the killer a real surprise.

This was a very enjoyable novella from Heather Gudenkauf. I love the idea of introducing us to a character through a short story, giving us a chance to meet him or her before the full-length novel comes out.

I've seen a lot of authors do this "teaser" lately, but only offer the first few chapters of a new release. I like this approach of a separate story using the same characters much better.

While I admit that I'm drawn to this author because she writes about things or places I know, I think many of us could relate to her characters.

I enjoyed getting to know Ellen Moore and the child she was called to help. Sometimes short stories can feel a bit rushed, but I thought this maintained a nice pace.

It felt a little abrupt toward the end, but it didn't bother me because I knew there was more to come. I'm definitely adding Little Mercies to my tbr list.

Basically simple language and easy peasy plot. This social worker's life is pure fiction. Especially in details of how she nurses her less than 2 month old baby while being gone at work for 12 to 15 hour spells and then sleeping for 8 hours straight at one point.

And all 3 kids under 8 also come and go with her only cooking macaroni or chicken fingers every few days.

They must have been another species from my kids? It made the entire mother value crux of the plot seem almost ridiculous. Social Basically simple language and easy peasy plot.

Social work is intensely realistic. This was not. The ending? I won't even go there. I read others of hers I liked better. No more. Beyond the baby schedule and children care unreality, it's YA level depth of sensibility prose form.

When preparing to leave for trivia night, Perry sees a text message on Celeste's phone from the landlady of her new apartment.

He confronts her on the way to the party, but is interrupted by Renata. Meanwhile, a drunk Madeline runs away during Ed's singing performance after realizing just how much he loves her and how little she gives him in return.

Jane goes after her and finds her atop stairs at the back of the venue. Madeline tells Jane that she cheated on Ed. Renata also goes after them and apologizes to Jane for having blamed Ziggy.

Celeste joins the women, followed by Perry. Bonnie follows them and watches the group from afar. Jane sees Perry and realizes that he is Saxon Banks.

Perry pleads with Celeste to come back home with him and when she declines, he viciously attacks her. The group unsuccessfully fights Perry off until Bonnie rushes in and pushes him down the stairs, killing him.

In police interviews, the women confirm that there was a fight with Perry but claim he fell accidentally. Later, the five women and their children lounge at the beach, where Detective Quinlan continues to watch them.

Kelley and Liane Moriarty. In the aftermath of Perry's death, Celeste, Madeline, Jane, and Renata try to move on with their lives, while Bonnie considers turning herself in to the police.

It is the first day of second grade for the children, and the five women reunite. Perry's mother, Mary Louise, who is staying with Celeste, begins asking questions about her son's death, and clashes with Madeline.

Nathan worries about how distant Bonnie has been with him and asks Ed for help. Abigail decides she will not go to college, to Madeline's disapproval.

At the beach, Corey, a co-worker of Jane's, asks her if she is one of the "Monterey Five". Jane tells the other women apart from Bonnie about this, and Renata assures them that the police have nothing.

Celeste has nightmares about Perry and Mary Louise questions her about them. Celeste crashes her car while on Ambien , with no recollections of what happened.

A worried Nathan calls Bonnie's parents to town. Gordon is arrested for insider trading and stock fraud by the FBI. Renata is dumbfounded that he is playing with an expensive train set while he has lost all of their money.

Mary Louise finds out that Perry has another son from Max and Josh. She refuses to believe that Perry raped Jane by victim blaming her.

Madeline grounds Chloe after finding out that she told Max, Josh, and Ziggy that the three boys share the same father. Jane reluctantly tells Ziggy about how he is the product of a rape.

Ed discovers Madeline's infidelity. Bonnie clashes with her mother, and remembers traumatic incidents from her childhood.

Amabella has an anxiety attack during a lesson about climate change. Renata hires a child psychologist and finds out Amabella is worried about the planet dying, her father going to jail as well as Renata's mental state.

Renata blames Gordon for it and confronts Principal Nippal and Mr. Perkins about teaching second graders about climate change.

Mary Louise approaches Jane at work and requests for a paternity test be done, which Jane refuses. Mary Louise then lurks in the parking lot of Jane's apartment to take a look at Ziggy.

She finds similarities between Ziggy and Perry's twin brother, who died as a child, but refuses to accept the fact that Perry was abusive and a rapist.

To save their marriage, Madeline and Ed visit Celeste's therapist. During a parents meeting at Otter Bay Elementary, Madeline breaks down while speaking.

Jane and Corey go on a date, but she is unable to be intimate with him.
